On July 23, 2025, Mr. Nathaniel Abednego Surya successfully defended his bachelor’s thesis at the Technical University of Ilmenau, within the Department of Mechatronics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The thesis was carried out in close cooperation with Ilmenauer Mechatronik GmbH.

Under the title
Optimization of Magnetic Field Measurement of a Flat Sample Device for Cross-Sections of Variable Shapes
Mr. Surya developed a universal measurement adapter for capturing the magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials. The goal was to expand the existing adapter system of the MagHyst®️ modular system in such a way that both flat sheet samples and cylindrical rod samples could be measured reliably and precisely – without requiring an adapter change.

The work focused on three main aspects:
Development of a Measurement Adapter for Various Sample Shapes
To eliminate the need for switching between different adapters, a new concept was implemented that accommodates both flat samples up to 30 × 5 mm and round rod samples up to Ø 9 mm. This significantly increases flexibility during measurements.
Minimization of Measurement Noise
Through targeted design modifications and improved signal processing, measurement noise was significantly reduced, resulting in higher accuracy and reproducibility of the measurement results.
Simulation-Based Optimization of Adapter Geometry
Using FEM simulations (Finite Element Method), magnetic flux distributions were analyzed, and the design was optimized accordingly. This allowed potential weaknesses to be identified early and effectively addressed.

The thesis was supervised by AOR PD Dr.-Ing. habil. Tom Ströhla (TU Ilmenau) and M.Sc. Jörn Frasch (Ilmenauer Mechatronik GmbH).

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Mr. Surya for his excellent technical work and outstanding motivation throughout the project. Special thanks also go to TU Ilmenau and Dr. Ströhla for their support and the always very pleasant and productive cooperation and finally, to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Sattel, Head of Department, for enabling this collaboration.
